Anonymity is layers, not a switch

When you browse, you are identified through several independent channels at once:

  1. Your IP address — where your connection comes from
  2. Your traffic path — who can watch the wire between you and the site
  3. Cookies and local storage — what sites saved in your browser
  4. Browser fingerprint — the unique combination of your screen, fonts, hardware, and settings
  5. Your accounts — everything you do while logged in is attributed to you by definition

A VPN operates on layers 1 and 2. It does that job properly — but no tool that only works on two layers can honestly promise "anonymity."

What a VPN actually hides

  • Your IP from the sites you visit. They see the VPN server's address, shared with many other users. Your own address — which can localize you to a city and an ISP — stays out of their logs. See the difference yourself on our IP check page before and after connecting.
  • Your browsing from your ISP and local network. Your ISP, a hotel or café Wi-Fi operator, or anyone sniffing the same network sees only encrypted traffic to one server — not which sites you visit or what you do there.
  • Your rough location from IP-based tracking. Ad systems that profile by IP get the server's location, not yours.

These are real, useful protections. For most people — on public Wi-Fi, on networks they don't trust, in places where being watched is the default — this is the layer that matters most.

What a VPN does not hide

  • Cookies don't care about your IP. If a tracker set a cookie yesterday, it recognizes you today, VPN or not. Clearing cookies or using separate browser profiles is a different tool for a different layer.
  • Browser fingerprinting works without cookies. Your device's combination of characteristics is often unique enough to follow you across sites. VPNs do not change your fingerprint; browsers with fingerprint resistance do.
  • Logged-in means identified. Search, social, mail — while signed in, the service attributes activity to your account regardless of the IP it came from.
  • The VPN provider itself sees your traffic exits. You are shifting trust from your ISP to your VPN. If you need more than a VPN gives

Honesty requires saying this: for people whose safety depends on strong anonymity — sources, activists, people at real risk — a VPN alone is not the right tool. The Tor network exists for that, trading a lot of speed for a much stronger anonymity model. A VPN and Tor solve different problems; pretending one substitutes for the other helps nobody.

For everyday privacy, a practical stack looks like:

  1. VPN on — covers IP and path (layers 1–2)
  2. Tracker/ad blocking and cookie hygiene — layer 3
  3. A privacy-conscious browser — layer 4
  4. Separate accounts/profiles for separate contexts — layer 5
